Granny Square One
Traditional granny squares will forever remain popular among both experienced and new crochet enthusiasts. From the simple design below to the elaborate artistic designs of crochet artists the possibilities are endless. They are the key to understanding crochet motifs and so we begin our 4×4 granny square collection here. These cute four round granny squares are the perfect base for a sofa blanket and a great way to use up scrap yarn or practice technique for beginners. There are at least two methods to try. Two patterns are included below.

You can make traditional granny squares in one solid colour or change colours each round.

These traditional granny squares are featured in many of my favourite tv shows to watch while crocheting.
The Big Bang Theory and The Gilmore Girls both feature tradition crochet blankets and granny squares! See if you can spot them.
Materials
I recommend making granny squares with several different yarn varieties. All yarns are suitable but beginners may want to start with acrylic or cotton.

You can keep crocheting your traditional granny squares for as many rounds as you like by following the same increase pattern in the corners. A large granny square is a great first blanket project for beginners. The first blanket I made is one large granny square with two colours.
Happy crocheting,
